Are sunglasses important? Yes, and here's why!

Not only does our skin need protection from harmful UV rays, so do our eyes. Protect your eyes from the damaging effect of UV light by wearing  sunglasses.  Damage from UV rays can cause sunburn to the eyes, resulting in photokeratitis or solar maculopathy. Other eye conditions from excessive UV exposure are cataracts, macular degeneration, pinguecula, and pterygium.

What kind of sunglasses should you buy?

Look for sunglasses with 100% UV protection with a UV shade protection of 400. The larger the sunglass the better. This will prevent UV light from getting in through the sides of the frame and also protect your eyelids from the sun.

Also, do not forget to wear your sunglasses in the shade since light can reflect off of other surfaces and reach the eye. Sunglasses are not only necessary for the warm weather months. They should be worn during the winter since UV light can reflect off of snow enter the eyes. Sunglasses are important for healthy eyes year round!
